Staff Corner: The importance of maintainers and contributors at LF Decentralized Trust

At LF Decentralized Trust, the driving force for our projects are the maintainers and contributors. These dedicated individuals are the ones who roll up their sleeves and do the important planning, development, and governance work that not only sustains our projects but pushes the boundaries of innovation, collaboration, and community growth. Their collective contributions are instrumental to a vibrant and dynamic ecosystem.

This week in San Francisco, during our Maintainer Days, we will gather with many of these leaders to share knowledge, collaborate, and strategize project roadmaps.

It’s about the Maintainers

Maintainers are the unsung heroes of open source communities. They serve as the custodians of project integrity, setting the vision and technical roadmap of their projects while contributing to the overall mission of the foundation. At LF Decentralized Trust, some of our maintainers already have more than eight years of contributions as part of Hyperledger and TrustOverIP, which are now part of LF Decentralized Trust. Our  maintainers are responsible for more than just code reviews and bug fixes—they guide contributors, mentor new developers, and map the overall work across the project. They are also critical voices in ensuring transparency and openness in the development process.

Strong maintainers are crucial for driving long-term project sustainability. By keeping the technical and governance aspects in check, they ensure projects remain adaptable, secure, and aligned with the needs of our broader ecosystem. Their efforts extend beyond the technical realm; maintainers help cultivate an inclusive and collaborative environment, inviting contributions from diverse sources.

Contributors: Building together

Contributors, whether seasoned developers or those just entering the blockchain, decentralized identity or Web3 space, play a pivotal role in shaping LF Decentralized Trust projects. Their input often sparks new developments, solutions, and use cases that propel the community forward. Every line of code, documentation update, and shared idea strengthens the foundation of our ecosystem.

We recognize the importance of supporting contributors at all stages of their journey. Whether through mentoring, knowledge sharing, or recognizing their achievements, LF Decentralized Trust is committed to ensuring every contributor can see the tangible impact of his or her work.

Showcasing developers and their work

We regularly spotlight maintainers and contributors from across the community in our Meet the Maintainers and Developer Showcase series. This is a tradition started to celebrate contributions across the Hyperledger community and will continue as a way to highlight inspiring stories within the LF Decentralized Trust ecosystem.

We invite you to explore some of our Meet the Maintainers and Developer Showcase posts. They feature the journeys, insights, and achievements of key individuals and teams in our community:

Meet the Hyperledger Fabric Maintainers – David Enyeart, IBM
Meet the Hyperleger Fabric Maintainers – Tatsuya Sato, Hitachi, Ltd
Meet the Hyperledger Besu Maintainers – Matthew Whitehead, Kaleido
Developer Showcase Series: Alvaro Picazo Haase, Blockchain Engineer, Accenture
Developer Showcase Series: Harsh Multani, Blockchain Developer, Siemens
Developer Showcase Series: Nithin Pankaj, Senior Software Engineer, Walmart
Developer Showcase Series: Fernando Paris, Co-CEO and CTO, ioBuilders
Developer Showcase Series: Nidhi Singh, Walmart Global Tech
Developer showcase series: Jason Sherman, Developer at Energy & Mines Digital Trust, Government of British Columbia

By spotlighting contributors, we hope to inspire more developers to get involved and find their own role to play in advancing LF Decentralized Trust projects. Should this be you or others on your team who are existing community contributors? Submit here

Looking Ahead: The LF Decentralized Trust TAC Election

One other important role our maintainers and contributors play is electing the LF Decentralized Trust Technical Advisory Council (TAC) election. The TAC sets the technical direction of LF Decentralized Trust, ensuring that the projects we incubate and mature reflect the values of open collaboration and innovation. This includes assuring that each initiative aligns with the core principles of open collaboration, innovation, and community-driven development. Read up on the important work of this governance body in this Q+A with the current chair and co-chair.

We want to thank this year’s TAC for their leadership and expertise in maintaining the highest standards across the ecosystem, fostering a vibrant and sustainable foundation for enterprise-grade blockchain solutions, and leading us through the transitions from Hyperledger Foundation to LF Decentralized Trust. As LF Decentralized Trust continues to grow, we deeply appreciate the invaluable contributions of the TAC members, and we look forward to building on the strong foundation they have helped establish.

 TAC

This year’s annual TAC election process is underway. Maintainers and contributors are encouraged to actively participate in this process, either by voting or considering a run for a seat on the TAC. This is your opportunity to shape the future of decentralized technologies and be a voice for the developer commu nity in LF Decentralized Trust governance.

Get Involved

At LF Decentralized Trust, we believe that every contribution—big or small—has the power to drive meaningful change. Whether you are a maintainer, contributor, or just beginning your journey into open source, there is a place for you in our community.

To get involved, find us on Discord. And watch this space for more updates, Meet the Maintainers interviews and Developer Showcases. (Want to share your contributor story? Reach out here.) Finally, we encourage everyone who is eligible to participate in the TAC elections. Your voice matters.
